“Dallas Buyers Club” is an upcoming film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and starring Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner. It is based on the true-life tale of Ron Woodroof, a man diagnosed with HIV who began smuggling alternative medicine in the 1980’s.
After a surprise diagnosis, Woodroof started taking Food and Drug Administration approved AZT, at the time the only legal drug available in the U.S. to fight HIV. When it did little to help him, in order to survive, he began smuggling anti-viral medications from all over the world into the U.S.
Other AIDS patients sought out his medications forgoing hospitals, doctors and AZT. With the help of his doctor and a fellow patient, Woodroof unintentionally created the Dallas Buyers Club, providing its paying members with these alternative life-extending treatments.
The film is set for a U.S. release on November 1, 2013.
McConaughey is said to have lost 40 pounds for the lead role and Oscar buzz is building fast.
